James Nicoll recently linked to a discussion on RASFW that meandered into the issue of where to meet a possible mate. The context was not only heterosexual but heterosexist, but it sparked a question in my mind.
So, where did you meet someone who subsequently became a romantic partner? This is all checkboxes, because, unlike Marianne Dashwood and the Vicar of Wakefield, I do believe in second attachments.
I've first met a romantic partner...
At school (pre-college)
At college or grad school
At church, synagogue, or other religious activity
Through a club or social activity, such as an SF convention
Online through a dating service
Online but not through a dating service
On public transit
Introduced by friends as a fix-up
Introduced by family as a fix-up
Introduced by family as a relative
Knew from neighborhood where we grew up
At work (colleague)
At work (customer, client, or other person met via work)
The best way to get to know someone is...
Working with them
Getting drunk/high with them
Talking with them
Reading what they write
Watching how they interact with others
Watching how they interact with you
Looking at their books, music, art, etc.
Watching how they deal with their own stress
Watching how they deal with your stress
Arguing with them
Doing taxes together/sharing a checking account
Raising kids with them
You can never know someone else
Once you've left high school, is it harder or easier to meet potential mates?
Harder, because the rest of the world offers fewer single prospects
Harder, because it's difficult to get to know people outside an academic setting
Easier, because I have more chance now to meet people who share my interests
Easier, because everybody is a jerk in high school
Something else, which I will explain in comments
