I am voluptuously embedded in Gillian Gill's marvelous Nightingales: The Extraordinary Upbringing and Curious Life of Miss Florence Nightingale. It's a biography not just of Florence, but of her family and their social circle. The family encompassed Barbara Bodichon, founder of Girton College, and various Bonham-Carters. The social circle drew in the great abolitionist Wilberforce, Charles James Fox, and generations of Darwins. I am having a wonderful time, and Florence hasn't even been conceived yet.
