A British Literary Question

Over on Twitter, thefictiondesk asked: Is there a British equivalent to The Great Gatsby? I responded: Class issues are too different. Lucky Jim may be closest.

And God knows that's not terribly close. For one thing, it's a comedy, not a tragedy.

What are your candidates for the British Great Gatsby? Or is it just not possible to have one?
