Wisdom about Race and Power

via [personal profile] mslorelei.

I figured out why “lives on the line” as a reason to respect police officers has been sitting so badly with me.

Living while black is living with lives on the line, wondering when an encounter with authority is going to result in wrongful death…and that death is going to be seen by many as justified simply by de facto “truth” that all black people are perceived as criminal…while police death will be prosecuted to the utmost limits, and seen as an atrocity.

I am guessing that for white people who support the police for their risks, they themselves do not live risky lives in that fashion, and it seems heroic…and they cannot imagine what it is like to live while black, and assume that anyone who reports fear of police must have a fugitive conscience.
